We, the concerned taxpaying citizens and stakeholders residing in the Eden Prairie School District, hereby present this petition to the Eden Prairie School Board to respectfully request that Board members Carol Bomben, Suzanne Kutina, Chuck Mueller and Kim Ross rescind their vote for the K-6 facilities plan presented by Superintendent Melissa Krull on February 23, 2010. We object to the K-6 facilities plan for a number of reasons, including the following:

  • The K-6 facilities plan presented by the Superintendent has an estimated price tag between $120,000 and $1,070,000. We find this to be fiscally irresponsible at a time when budgets are being cut system-wide, and on the heels of a wage freeze for our teachers and staff.
  • The Superintendent set three parameters which severely limited the options the Five-Year Facilities Committee could consider. She required that any final plan had to meet the demand for preschool, full-day kindergarten, and the Spanish Immersion program. Capturing cost-savings was not a parameter.
  • The K-6 facilities recommendation did not include enough detail to support a responsible decision. No plan was presented for the type of K-6 elementary to be added at Oak Point, the significant boundary changes required in order to fit grades 5 and 6 into all neighborhood schools, or how we will deliver Oak Point's music and other centralized programs to multiple locations without sacrificing quality or increasing costs.

We want the Board to revisit the many options available for our facilities without being limited by the Superintendent's parameters. We want a transparent process which the Board oversees, and which allows time to build understanding and support in the community. We want a facilities plan that is thorough and fiscally responsible, and  that provides clear educational benefits for all students. We are concerned that moving forward with this plan will endanger the organization's public image and credibility, and will have a negative impact on our district's financial state and our property values.

There has been a change to our timeline. Due to a change in the Board meeting schedule, no regular evening Board meetings are being held this month after the May 11th meeting, so we have decided to present the petition to the Board on Tuesday evening, June 8.
