As parents, we are concerned that music students are NOT being offered MORE opportunities as stated in El Camino's charter document. In fact, by cutting the Concert Band program, ECR students are being offered LESS opportunities. We demand the return of the Concert Band class and that music students be offered the same comprehensive, sequential, and rigorous program of instruction taught by certified and qualified teachers that ECRCHS offers to other academic and athletic disciplines. The current music program not only hinders current ECR music students in preparing for music at the college level, it is also eliminating the bridge between the high school and middle school programs.

The follow is from page 8 on the El Camino Real Charter Document:

I. INTRODUCTION AND FOUNDING GROUP/CONSULTANTS

A. Introduction

We at ECR would like to convert to charter to further develop academic standards and opportunities on campus for all learners at varied levels. We would like to have more control over governance and curriculumso that students may find more opportunities to excel in academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities. We desire that they gain skills that will prepare them for post-secondary college and career options. We want to operate efficiently and be responsible to our unique student body and parents. We want to introduce more technology into the curriculum and school site so that communication is efficient and seamless. In order to achieve such enhancement and give our students more individual support we shall lower classes sizes and increase our support staff. We would like to promote the six pillars of character in our students encouraging civic responsibility and personal growth.

Music is the key to all areas of academics. Keep options available to our students. Concert band and Mr. D are what made the adjustment from middle school to high school a positive experience for my son.

I was in the concert band program at El Camino up until my senior year when they cut the class and the students were forced to join orchestra and play in the back. Please bring back concert band for all of the kids who want to foster their love for music!

It is rediculous and outrageous! If the arts are taken from our children they will be taking a very important part of their education! Not only is it unjust, it is cruel. Wilco is becoming as mediocre as all the other schools in the area. Time to start looking for another school that will keep our students' best interest in mind...

I am a private music teacher and am outraged that the Concert Band has been cut from El Camino. I have 5 students that graduated from hale and now have no High School Group to participate in. Every High School in the area has a concert band. Calabasas High has 2 concert bands, a marching band and 3 jazz bands. The fact that a high school with over 3,000 students doesn't offer a concert band is OUTRAGEOUS. This is one of the major problems with Charter Schools. They seem to answer to NO ONE!

My daughter loves band and it is heartbreaking to see these programs getting gutted. Arts are what keep so many kids motivated to come to school every day. Put it back!

The music department at elco is amazing. I loved being a part of it. It give you a connection to like minded people and a break from the stress of the school day with something that you love. When I graduated I thought that elco becoming a charter would make it better for the arts but i am sad to see that they are now becoming worse than lausd. They do not consider cutting sports teams should should the arts be any different?

We all need more music in our lives, so why do you take music away?
