Dear Mr. Secretary: Congratulations on your recent unanimous Senate confirmation as Secretary of Defense. Such a 100 to 0 confirmation vote would be unusual at any time, but in the present partisan atmosphere in Congress, it is truly extraordinary.It represents a vote of confidence that you have well earned. It shows that all 100 senators agree that as you face the difficult challenges ahead, you will bring the same outstanding skills, wisdom and sound judgment to the job that you have exhibited over the many years you have so ably served our nation. We, the Democrats of Monterey County, are not surprised by your continued success. For, we in the Monterey area who have known you the longest, know full well how truly extraordinary you are.
