Due to the number of incidents of students and cross guards almost being struck by motorists while they are on the Crosswalk and the recent fatality of a crossing guard in the nearby city of West Springfield we need to make the crosswalks in our cities safer. The pedestrian crosswalk in front of Duggan Middle needs to be improved. Wilbraham Road is a very busy street between the hours of 7:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. After 3 pm, students with extra curricular activities do not have a safe way to cross the street. Countless times, I have witnessed students dodging through traffic just to cross the street in front of Duggan Middle School.

Some suggestions are yellow caution lights that are always on and bright paint to mark the crosswalk.

We, the undersigned, call on the city Springfield to improve the school crosswalk in front of Duggan Middle School on Wilbraham Road. This area needs to be safer for students, crossing guards and the community as a whole.
