PETITION IN SUPPORT OF DUAL CITIZENSHIP IN LIBERIA

 Target: The Liberian Government

Sponsored By: Organization for the Promotion of Development in Liberia (OPODL)

The undersigned, request, urge and encourage the government of Liberia through the National Legislature to introduce dual citizenship in Liberia. Liberians and those born unto Liberian parents around the world are losing out because, under the Liberian constitution, Liberia does not recognize dual citizenship. On adopting foreign citizenship, Liberians automatically relinquish their Liberian citizenship only to become foreigners in their own country. Individuals born to Liberian parents outside of Liberia are also not given the option to become Liberian citizens. We are of the strongest conviction that as the rights, privileges, or immunities enjoyed under the citizenship of Liberia terminate, this restricts the effective contribution to the development of our beloved country, Liberia. Therefore, we humbly ask that natural born Liberians who gain foreign citizenship through naturalization are granted the opportunity to retain or reacquire their Liberian citizenship. We also ask that foreign nationals born unto Liberian parents be given the option to obtain Liberian citizenship while at the same time maintaining the citizenship of their country of birth. This issue should not be about us versus them, but rather it should be about our common patrimony, Liberia. In light of the above, it is important for development oriented and patriotic Liberians to urge the National Legislature to pass into law the dual citizenship bill. Please provide your signature below in support of this noble petition.
