Wake up and get out of your campus bubble. Stop with the "inclusive" BS. You aren't 'including' the majority in your opinions and you have already lost. You people are wasting your time. DU has already decided that the nickname is not going to change, and they are 100% right. The Pioneers built the school, the City and the State. The nickname has been there for 90+ years, and vast majority of people in the DU community and the city do not find the name offensive at all, as there is far more good associated with Pioneers than bad. All you are doing is pissing off your classmates and making them resent you. Find a different thing to complain about, and stop wasting everyones time.

I find this extremely hard to stomach. If we were to remove every word that is "stained" in some form or another, the English language would be a shell. Yes, if you look hard enough many words have connotations behind them that aren't exactly pristine. But very few things do. History is unclean and messy. Terrible things have happened. By your logic, we should rename the Patriots Football Team, since the original patriots displaced and murdered Native Americans, rename the Ford Explorer, since explorers like Christopher Columbus did heinous things, and rename the city of Cheyenne Washington to something else because of how the Cheyenne Tribe was violently wiped out by sadistic settlers. It's preposterous.

I am not sure how DU can claim to be committed to "diversity and inclusive excellence" while retaining b***e and p*****r at the same time. Diversity is taking seriously what marginal groups are saying. #NoMorePios

The University stands for honoring the Cheyennes and Arapahos whom its initial Trustees- Evans and Chivington - murdered at Sand Creek. The continuation of the Pioneers nickname contradicts this. It would be the right thing, for all of us, to find another name. The government that installed the "Pioneers" did so on the basis of genocide. Silas Soule and Joseph Cramer and noble figures, But the process of "pioneering" is stained. There is no way of removing that connotation from this nickname...The Native Students are completely right on this, and represent the wellbeing and interests of all of us in having a community and understanding the meaning of and rejecting an unbearable nickname...

I wholeheartedly disagree with this claim. I concede that Boone can be considered offensive, I understand that argument, and agree with the removal of the mascot. What I disagree with is that the Pioneers is an offensive term.
The part-a portion of the second definition for Pioneer in Websters Dictionary defines a Pioneer as, "a person or group that originates or helps open up a new line of thought or activity or a new method or technical development " I think that is the definition of Pioneer we should align ourselves with.
Distancing ourselves from the part-b portion of the second definition, "one of the first to settle in a territory" should be our goal.
Instead of focusing energy on getting rid of a non-offensive name from our school, we should focus on abolishing the truly offensive mascots, like the Washington Redskins.
