I urge Governor Paterson and the New York State Department of Conservation to extend the public comment period on proposed regulations governing development of the gas-rich Marcellus Shale. The environmental impact study stipulates a comment period of 60 days and a deadline for comments of November 30, 2009. This comment period of 60 days is woefully inadequate. New Yorkers need sufficient time to read and digest this often confusing 800 page report which is going to have such a marked impact on their lives. We need at least another 60 days to give people time to commission independent scientific study and analyze the report. It is dangerously irresponsible to rush this decision that could have a catastrophic impact on the people, livestock, air, water and land of New York State.

Updates

November 10, 2009

The feedback coming in highlights a deep concern for the long term safety of our water and land. Behind the scenes I am coordinating with local experts to ensure that our request for more time is framed by the specific complexities found within the environmental impact report.

October 24, 2009

Reaching one hundred signatures confirms that many of you share the same frustration regarding the timeline for such a complex report. It is a quiet but meaningful start to our effort to secure the time needed for a proper review.

Stop trying to pull a fast one on us ny residents. we need way more than 60 days to study this.

800 pages is way too much to read in 60 days. give us a chance to actually look at what they are planning to do to our water.

DONT RUSH THIS!!! We live here and deserve real time to look at the facts before they ruin everything.

my family relies on well water and i am terrified about what hydrofracking will do to us. slow down and let the public see the data.
