My Friend, Bloneva, was a victim of a drunk driving fatality in October 25,2014. Her family has been suffering the tremendous loss of a beautiful young 27 year old woman who was in the prime of her life and had many wonderful things to offer this world. Help me and her family in lobbying the State of Florida in making first time offenders or Second time pay with longer prison terms and suspension of driving privileges for extended periods when a life altering accident occurs as was the case for her family.

In 2012, 10,322 people died in drunk driving crashes - one every 51 minutes - and 290,000 were injured in drunk driving crashes.
.Every two minutes, a person is injured in a drunk driving crash.
.Each day, people drive drunk almost 300,000 times, but fewer than 4,000 are arrested.
.An average drunk driver has driven drunk 80 times before first arrest.
.The rate of drunk driving is highest among 21 to 25 year old (23.4)
.Every day in America, another 28 people die as a result of drunk driving.
.Impairment is not determined by the type of drink, but rather by the amount of alcohol drunk over time.
.About one-third of all drivers arrested or convicted of drunk driving are repeat offenders.

Fortunately, there is a technology that has the potential to eliminate these preventable deaths-the ignition interlock. These sophisticated devices can prevent a vehicle from being driven by a drunk driver. If they are used correctly-in concert with treatment, in addition to hard license suspensions, and in the vehicles until they are no longer needed- they can stop repeat offenses.

People who have previous drunk driving convictions make up approximately one-third of the drunk driving problem in America. These are people who have been failed by a system that has in turn failed to keep the rest of us safe. Even first-time offenses are serious indicators that a person is likely to become a repeat offender. First-time offenders have driven drunk an average of 87 times before they are convicted and most likely have a serious problem with alcohol. Several studies in the United States and Canada have shown that ignition interlocks decrease repeat offenses by 50-90%.

The sad thing is that we have the capable technology and we know how to reverse the trend, but the laws haven't been passed yet making this technology mandatory for ALL convicted DUI offenders. Only four states have this law -- we need to get it around the country.
