While the Honor Code is great, and we support and subscribe to it, the Dress and Grooming Standards are coming up short in fairness and enforcement. It seems that the only people being denied services at BYU are the men who haven’t shaved that day. The ideals behind the dress and grooming standards are to maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance. And Dallin H. Oaks said over 40 years ago "Our rules against beards and long hair are contemporary and pragmatic, they are responsive to conditions and attitudes in our own society at this particular point in time and are subject to change. I would be surprised if they were not changed at some time in the future."

Sign if you agree that well-groomed facial hair (beards, goatees, and moustaches) should be added and accepted by the Honor Code. Upon completion this will be submitted in person to the Director of the Honor Code office.

Updates

The emails I receive from those of you dealing with the daily enforcement of these rules are exhausting to read because they highlight just how outdated things have become. I am currently organizing these individual stories so I have a clear argument ready when I finally sit down with the office to demand a change. It is a slow and draining process but the necessity of this work keeps me going.

Reaching this level of support has been an exhausting but incredible climb. It is clearer than ever that people are tired of these outdated restrictions. I am worn thin by the struggle but I am staying in this until we see a change.

I completely agree. You know a code is out dated when someone is allowed a mustache but not a well-groomed beard. 100% in favor

I support this wholeheartedly, it's time the BYU honor code changed to reflect the change of times. Beards are no longer associated with hippies and are actually a sign of maturity, not to mention help avoid razor burn or constant shaving.

I have been going to class with a beard all semester and have not once been asked to shave by my professors. It is well kept and looks professional. I would keep it in an interview setting, so why is it "not allowed" at my school.

I think that neatly trimmed facial hair looks good. I wish the policy would change for BYU and Church employees. My husband works for the church up in salt lake and can't have a nicely trimmed beard. I think the rule is outdated and should be overturned.

I'm a BYU-I student and this should be just as applicable up here as it is in Provo.

While I agree that rugged unkept beards should be discouraged I think that well groomed facial hair is acceptable. Teaching us to be professional does not mean prohibiting all types of facial hair. Some type of revision may help.
