Sullivan County split from Ulster County in 1809 and was named after Maj. Gen. John Sullivan. Sullivan is "credited" with the 1779 scorched earth campaign against the Six Nations of the Iroquois that bears his name. The Sullivan Expedition was a military assault on the Indian heartland, whose whole purpose was to destroy all Indian villages, crops, livestock, men, women and children. Nothing was to be left standing. It was wildly successful, driving the nations into Canada never to return.

My desire is to make this history known and change the name of our county. My suggestion is Brant County, after the man who unsuccessfully led the Iroquois against General Sullivan. There is no Brant County in the U.S.
