Murray, I have never paddled through there but my family has taken a small motorboat through Speed Alley on a number of occasions, and on one of those occasions wake boats scared the hell out of us. You're wrong about the rules of navigation being trumped by "common sense". Your common sense differs from mine and that is why the U.S. Coast Guard has created the nab rules to ensure people operating different craft with different capabilities are held to legal standards of behavior, and beleive me I have seen hundreds of violations of Coast Guard laws on the river- any one of which could have resulted in the loss of a life. Problem is 99% of boaters never take a safety class and believe as you seem to that the absence of road markings and stop signs means there are no laws governing your behavior.

Not one ski boat operator has stepped up to take responsibility for drawing attention to this area by their own illegal actions. Quit blaming "kayakers" and deal with your own group's illegal actions. Put the blame where it belongs. Irresponsible violators brought this attention to this area by harassing innocent other users. Just because most of you have not witnessed the illegal behavior does not mean it did not happen. The Citations that have been issued are absolute proof.

Thank you Murray. First reminder: NO KAYAKER EVER PETITIONED FOR EXCLUSIVE USE OF THIS AREA Re: Laws written for Navigational towing and boats restricted in their ability to maneuver apply to boats engaged to work on the water - not to boats engaged in recreational water skiing. "Towing": A boat with a Tow refers to a boat towing another boat ie: Vessel Assist or a boat towing a barge, dredge and repair boats.
Re: Laws written for boats restricted to deeper parts of a channel apply to "deep draft boats" like the Casino Boat, not for boats engaged in recreational water skiing with the option to stop, slow to No Wake Speed and maneuver as needed.
(CFR-33) US Coast Guard Navigation Rules Inland Waters and Western Rivers Navigable Rivers: Manually propelled vessels have the right-of-way over" all other vessels". (ie: vessels engaged in recreational water skiing).
§83.06 Safe speed (Rule 6).
Every vessel shall at all times proceed at a safe speed so that she can take proper and effective action to avoid collision and be stopped within a distance appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions. ..
§83.18 Responsibilities between vessels (a) A power-driven vessel underway shall keep out of the way of:
(ii) A vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver.
(1.g) When necessary to protect the public health, safety and welfare due to the physical nature and characteristics of any waters under the jurisdiction of the commission, the commission may promulgate further rules governing vessel traffic on such waters.
Rule 18: (a) A power-driven vessel underway shall keep out of the way of:
(ii) a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver;
You can't misconstrue the law to serve your own "selfish purposes".
Rule 8(f), ‘‘not to impede’’ is applicable to vessels crossing a narrow channel or fairway...However, if vessels are sighted utilizing the narrow channel
or fairway, these vessels using the channel for their own purposes are to
cease and follo

Carrie, That's great. Most skiers have been polite. Unfortunately too many Illegal Violations were going on there. This is a case of a "few bad actors" ruining it for all. No Kayaker EVER PETITIONED for a NO WAKE ZONE. This petition was written in ignorance of the facts and is intended to incite anger against an innocent group of users.

Kayakers,
I am 41 years old and was raised in Havasu and now travel there to my second home. My family raced Formula One boats on the lake. I have never seen any misconduct amongst any of my fellow "speed alley" boating friends or any injuries due to skiing or wakeboarding The coves and locations referenced as designated places for us to tow is a joke... The people who are using "speed alley" are above average rider's, skier's, and boater's, who have been doing it for years back there and know how to SHARE. So, don't take it away from the people who appreciate that area more than you realize! The lake has gotten busy... You're exactly correct. Compromise and use the areas where we cannot go.

Please tell me where the no ski zone is posted in that specific area. I've been going there for over 16 years. The only buoy I've seen is past that area " where we don't ski". Thx

I would welcome the opportunity to tell a judge what I witnessed. I know what I saw. I am an experienced boater and have a better understanding of the rules than most so by all means, have any member of the law contact me that you wish.

What are you even referring to re: mission to ban ski boats from this area? Any "mission" is just to be able to safely navigate through this area. We have power craft, used to jet ski through here. It is the Illegal Violators that are ruining it for others. You really should get your facts straight.
Kayakers were NOT the ones telling anyone else to leave; THAT was SKI BOATERS. Ski Boaters stated "this is our area" and did not want to "share". Who gave ski boaters exclusive rights to this area?
