Our school has recently added Securly, a Internet filter that is extremely intrusive and ineffective. Filters like this have no way of functioning on a case by case basis, and prove to be an excessive restriction on all for the problems of a few. Not only does this filter block pages from news and informational websites like the New York Times, Gawker, and Reddit, but it also doesn't have the scrutiny to recognize searches like "Breast cancer awareness" and "Percent of rapists in Jail" as appropriate valid searches. This type of censorship comes right off the heels of government censorship and surveillance bills that intent to control the internet, one of only the truly free forms media left.
