Dont build the Nicaragua Canal

Good Afternoon! My name is Andrea and I am a 6th grade student in Managua. Do you love water, plants and animals? If you want to conserve these three precious things sign this petition so that the government does not make a canal.
Do you think that making another canal in Central America is a good decision? Let me tell you something, it is not!!! Why would you want to make another one if there is already one nearby in Panama? You, as the government, are aware what the building of this canal will make to the whole country. I hope you are because you are putting Lake Nicaragua, the largest source of drinking water in Central America, at risk. All of the most precious plants and animals will die because their habitats will be destroyed. As if that is not enough, many people and indigenous tribes will lose their homes where they have lived for hundreds of years and you will make a construction there.
According to Petition: Nicaragua, Is a New Canal Worth the Sacrifice?" Petition: Nicaragua, Is a New Canal Worth the Sacrifice? N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Oct. 2015., president Daniel Ortega and Wang Jing want to build an interoceanic canal for shipping. This canal will cost 50 billion dollars, and guess who is going to pay for all of that, us! Wang Jing: The Man behind the Nicaragua Canal Project - BBC News."BBC News. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Oct. 2015. states that the canal will take 5 years to build which means 5 years of paying high taxes so that they can pay the canal. The canal will pass through lake Nicaragua and as I said before it is the largest source of drinking water in Central America. Imagine if all of that water gets contaminated. Where will we get water from? Bracing for a Sea Change." Al Jazeera America. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Oct. 2015. explains that there are people who make a living out of that lake, where will they get a new job? How will they make a living? Nicaragua will lose a lot of money in tourism because the lake is a big tourist attraction in our country.
The canal won't just take our precious water away, it will also take our precious animals and people will lose their precious homes. Do you think that is fair? Wildlife in Nicaragua." Wildlife in Nicaragua. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Oct. 2015. states that Nicaragua has a lot species that many other countries don't have. That would be a huge ecological disaster to kill them all. Some of the many special animals that this country has are the two toed sloth, Tamandua anteater, armadillo, puma, cougar, jaguarundi, margay and ocelot. As I said before Nicaragua will not only lose a lot of money in tourism, but to make things worse it will lose many animals and affect the ecosystem.
What do people want? According to “My Thoughts on the Nicaragua Canal - Nicaragua Comunidad." Nicaragua Comunidad. N.p., 24 Nov. 2014. Web. 05 Oct. 2015, the canal will be 172 miles long, from 755-1706 feet wide and 90 feet deep. That is how much space it will take from the country. Some people are in favor of the canal because they are going to make a good profit out of it. But they don't think of those people who are going to lose their homes and their lands and those animals who are probably going to lose their homes, and even worse, some are going too become extinct. Many people think that the canal will bring many more opportunities for jobs, but take a look at this, 50,000 chinese are coming to Nicaragua. Chinese will want to get a job, their first idea will be the canal. Now the big question is, who is going to get more jobs Nicaragua, who is the second poorest country in America, or the chinese? Stated Nicaragua Canal: China's Strategic Presence in Central America." The Diplomat. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Oct. 2015. China is inverting a lot of money in this project which means that they will want a lot back, a lot. Like Ghandi once said: “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.”
Do you want to conserve water, plants, animals and peoples jobs? Sign this petition to conserve all these important things that the canal will destroy. Remember, take care of earth and earth will take care of you.
