I married very young to a guy who is not responsible or educated. He dropped out of school in the seventh grade and has a history of violence. When I was pregnant he cheated on me. I decided to leave him and he took my son without permission for an entire year. I missed our son's first steps and he tells our son to call his girlfiend "mama" and refers to me as our child's birth mother. When I told him that I was filing for divorce he came to my apartment and him and his girlfriend jumped on me! Beat me up really bad. I was cut up and bleeding from head to toe. I had injuries that required stitches, and worse of all when my head was slammed multiple times against the ground and car I started having seizures. I have hired three attorneys and it seems because of the color of my skin the Florida courts are trying to give my child to his drug addicted father. His girlfriend was arrested for numerous charges including arson, fraud, domestic violence and drugs. He has called child protective services on me at least 8 times, and each time the investigation concludes that I have a fit and stable environment to raise our child in. The initial Judge Pamela Cambell ordered that the visitation schedule should consist of monday through friday with mom, and weekends with dad. This judge that was heaven sent was rotated out and Judge Thomas Minkoff took over the case. Since then I have suffered through so many hearings where my ex tries to discredit me to no end. I am in college for family law and the way the system is working in florida is extremely discouraging. The Judge wants to put my son into an unsafe and violent environement. How can a three year old child be safe in a home where his dad cooks crack and both adults in the household abuse and sell drugs??? How can I sleep at night knowing his girlfriend locked people in a car and lit them on fire and is watching our son??? Would you put your child into the hands of such violent offenders as this??? The Judge seems to hold it against me because of the color of my skin and the fact that I keep fighting for our son and won't give into their cohercian tactics. I was not allowed any contact at all with our son for over six months. The reason I got married was so that a child that I birthed would have both of his parents in his life. This is a right every child should be entitled to. His father only wants our son in his life as a means to use me as his personal ATM machine and collect child support. The Judge refused to review the child protective services orders and often speaks harshly to me in court as if I am not intelligent. The day that I told my husband I was pregnant he tried to STRANGLE me!!! Litigation has been continuous for three years and has been very expensive. My ex's father would drive past my house and stalk me, I live in constant fear that I would again be brutally attacked. A neighbor that witnessed the beating alleged that it was lucky that I wasn't killed that awful night. As a single woman in fear for the safety and well being of our child and myself I have since left. I firmly believe in equal parenting rights. Is is so far fetched to request supervised visits until his father can stop using drugs and trying to make fast money illegally? Is it so far fetched that a black woman in America is stable, and education driven and willing and able to care for her child? Are we still in the days of prejudice? Can someone please help me as I cannot morally and ethically continue to leave our child in the hands of an abuser and I am truly afraid for our lives. In the 1980's, methadone clinics continued to emerge across the country since they successfully helped opioid addicted individuals experience dramatic improvement in their lives. Opioid addiction recovery involves more than just receiving methadone. It requires lifestyle change, improvements in thinking and behavior, and a willingness to learn and adapt to the challenges of life. Opioid replacement medication, by itself, cannot provide all of this. Consequently, quality methadone clinics will encourage their clients to use treatment as a means of enriching their lives and moving to higher plateaus. Methadone programs that do not provide this opportunity are called "dosing mills". Dosing mills usually exist to dispense methadone and collect a fee. Treat Treatment services and attention to client growth are not a priority. There is definite value in helping an addicted person to stop using illicit drugs and in stabilizing them on a safer opioid substitute, like methadone or suboxone. But this "medication only" approach is not recovery, and does not address the root problem of addiction or its underlying causes. The goal of quality methadone treatment programs is to empower their clients to live the fullest lives possible.
