People will love parks that keep orcas in captivity until they know the true story behind them. I used to go to Marineland in the South of France almost every summer and - to be honest - I loved it! It is indeed very impressive to see these animals interact with humans. When someone asked me if I didn’t feel bad for the orcas living in captivity, I would answer: “Don’t worry, they were born in captivity so they don’t know what they are missing in the wild. Good people are taking care of them and they must be happy.” At least that was my default answer until I watched the movie/documentary "Blackfish". Because that’s what I believed myself. I would never have considered people capable of taking a newborn calf away from its mother for it to attract more visitors in another park instead of ‘disturbing’ the acts of her mother. Apparently, just like most people, I was wrong.
Parents who are taking their kids to these parks definitely don't know what's going on there. Just like my parents didn't know when they first took me there. And we can't blame them for that, because the marine parks have become experts at hiding the truth for the public in order to make money. Even more, they hide the truth for their own trainers who daily put their lives at risk while working with these traumatized animals. And when it comes to an accident, the park's managers even dare to blame the trainers themselves for it. Dawn Brancheau for example, the last deadly victim of a captive orca (that we know of), was blamed by Seaworld for making an error leading to her own death. Show must go on, so let’s blame it on the dead and keep pretending there is nothing wrong with this business model of keeping traumatized animals in captivity.
We will not be able to stop this industry from their immoral practices just by writing letters to their managers. They are just blinded by the cash flow the animals generate and that is enough for them to make up for the rest of the story. What needs to be do
