On Wednesday, May 12, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced an unusual incentive for people to get vaccinated: a lottery that will pay 5 adults $1 million, and 5 youths a free ride to any public university.
We can only assume that this will be funded via tax dollars.
Right now, Ohio is struggling to pay normal expenses. Many small businesses, in particular, have gone under or are barely staying afloat due to the state's policies over the last year (forced closures, capacity limits, etc.). We do not have the tax dollars to spend on this kind of incentive program.
Instead, tax dollars should be redirected towards the people who have been hurt by DeWine's policies -- helping families who were put out of work and small businesses that have struggled.
Further, it is unethical to coerce people to receive a vaccine that is only authorized on an emergency basis and which has no long-term safety testing with such a high-stakes prize.
We believe that Mike DeWine's lottery needs to be canceled immediately, with all the tax dollars reallocated to those who were hurt by his COVID-19 policies.

im still getting messages from local business owners who are struggling to keep their doors open while the state throws money at a lottery. it feels wrong to see our tax dollars treated like a game when people are still trying to recover from the last year.

If you have to bribe people to take an injection, then there is obviously something questionable going on. And to use tax dollars when that money is needed for more important things is a misuse of funds and power.
So many better uses for this money. People should only get any vaccine because they have researched it and believe it to be safe, effective, and better than getting the illness for which it was created.
Ohio has come to an all time low. It is absolutely ridiculous that they are wasting so much money. If the vaccine is as good as "they" say it is, they shouldn't have to bribe people to get it. I am definitely not proud to be a buckeye anymore...
This “Covid Vaccine” lottery is unconscionable. It is wrong. Taking tax payer money to fund college and give a million dollars for taking a vaccine? I hope all politicians in favor of this lose their jobs. They cannot be trusted with the people’s money...I think it’s called stealing.
This is coercion. And statements made by The governor about effectiveness of this jab are not true. My tax dollars are not for other people’s medical decisions. Let’s reallocate to help our economy instead.

Medical procedures should be by choice and should never be forced or coerced. I believe using Americans tax dollars to incentivize people with a lottery to be vaccinated is despicable and I do not approve.
