As an alum and former employee, I feel that just because someone has money, they can have the name of a historic stadium, that was named for war veterans, changed to their last name. There are 100’s of other entities that they can put their name on, or just keep it on their mailbox.

Any mascot chosen to replace Chief Illiniwek (the once and always proud symbol of Illinois athletics) will be a tribute to political correctness ("Always political, seldom correct").

Getting rid of the Chief was a monument to foolish decision-making driven by a few ignorant loudmouths.
No mascot will ever replace the Chief.

I went to U of I in the 1980's. I chose the school over ones that many consider to be more "prestigious" and was proud to do so. It's a pathetic shame that the once-great U of I has let itself turn into a miserable copy-cat of those mealy-mouhed, politically correct and intolerant "presitgious" institutions in California and the northeast... the ones I elected not to attend for the very same reason. Midswesterners are supposed to be more reasonable than those on the coasts - not try to emulate them and their faults.

As an alumnus (MS '57) I am sick of the political correctness mentality at the U of I and long for the day UI regains the respect it once had. If you need a model, look to Hillsdale College.

Our entire family(alumni and otherwise) has always had the utmost respect for Chief Illiniwek and want to see the honorable tradition continued for future generations. The Chief is not a joke or even a mascot in the typical sense, but a revered symbol of a mighty and respected people group. Those opposed need to get over all this political correctness, be reasonable, and do the right thing by bringing back the Chief!

I was there in the 80's when they tried a mascot - it was booed off the basketball court.
Bring back the Chief. Take a real look at the option presented by the Peoria Tribe.
