The council backed down and the bridge name is staying exactly as it is. It has been a long and draining struggle but I am relieved that we kept our local history intact. We should stay alert to ensure they do not try this again later.
7 members of Limerick city council are trying to change the
name of the Shannon Bridge to the JFK bridge, if you do not want the name of
the bride to be changed to the JFK bridge can you please sign this to be
presented to city hall.
Five hundred people have signed on to keep our bridge name as it is. It has been a long road and my feet are tired but seeing this number reminds me why we started.

I do not want the name to change whatsoever. The shannon river is one of the largest rivers in Europe and the name is renowned throughout the world. The bridge over the shannon is at present appropriately named after this renowned river and I for one will be opposing any change to it.

What on earth are the council thinking, why oh why would they want to name the bridge over Irelands longest and most majestic rivers after an American president, when it's present name (The Shannon Bridge) is so apt.

It already has its name, there's nothing wrong with it. The people who think these things up have way too much time on their hands, it would be more in their line to do something useful and put the funds to the needy.

We already have a school named after JFK. This bridge should be called after the many Limerick Hero's of our proud city, Harris Bridge, Kate O' Brien Bridge, JP McManus Bridge. Practice what you preech Limerick Council & being proud of Limerick & it's hero's.

When seven people start to make decisions that are not in line with the wishes of the majority of whom they represent, then it's probably a bad idea don't you think? No need to rename it, at least not yet, and certainly not after JFK.
