Do Not Raise the Minimum Wage
Petition
Background
President
Obama has called on the US Congress to increase federal minimum wage from $7.25
to $10.10 per hour. At a recent speech, the President said “Members of the
Congress have a choice to make... Raise workers’ wages, grow our economy, or
let wages stagnate further, give workers what amounts to another pay cut.” In
reality, the President wants small businesses and small business owners to
shoulder the costs for his election year agenda.
Nationally,
only 2.9% of all employees earn the federal minimum wage. Two-thirds of those
employees work part-time (less than 35 hours a week). Further, most
minimum-wage earners are teenagers or young adults, not heads of families.
Small
businesses represent the foundation for the American economy. Labor costs
represent one of small business’ largest expenses. Many small businesses are
still recovering from the Great Recession and/or adapting to the new landscape,
and absorbing the costs, of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Raising the
federal minimum wage by more than 39% will not help to grow the economy.
Rather, small businesses will face tough choices in terms of eliminating staff
and cutting some products or services. Additionally, small businesses will be
forced to choose between raising prices, and risk a loss of business as
consumers search for cheaper options, or go out of business due to vanishing
profit margins.
Petition
We, the
undersigned business owners, insist that our elected representatives oppose
President Obama’s plan to increase the federal minimum wage. An unprecedented
and immediate increase of the federal minimum wage by more than 39% will stifle
investment in small businesses and handicap the economy for the foreseeable
future. Please make small business growth a high priority for our nation by
opposing the President’s plan to increase the minimum wage.
Sincerely,
