Aurora, Ind.) - Today, shortly before 8:00 am, the Indiana State Police responded to two vehicle crash on State Road 350 near Mount Sinai Road between a school bus and trash truck that sent over 20 people to area hospitals with injuries.
The initial investigation by the Indiana State Police-Versailles Crash Reconstruction Team indicated that a 2018 Mack trash truck (owned by Rumpke), being operated by Brian J. Rumpke, age 38, Cincinnati, Ohio was parked on the edge of the eastbound lane while Rumpke was picking up trash from a residence. A 2003 Thomas school bus (owned by Michael L. Hostetler but contracted with the South Dearborn School Corporation), being operated by Raymond W. Nies, age 64, Moores Hill, Indiana was traveling eastbound on State Road 350, approaching the Mack truck.
The school bus collided with the rear of the trash truck. Both vehicles came to rest in the eastbound lane of State Road 350. Brian Rumpke, who was standing outside of his vehicle, was struck by debris and sustained non-life threatening injuries. Nies sustained serious injuries. Both were transported to High Point Health in Dearborn County, Indiana for treatment. Nies was later transferred to University of Cincinnati Hospital for further treatment.
There were 22 students of the South Dearborn School Corporation on the school bus at the time of the crash. Those students were between 6th and 11th grades in school. Seventeen students were transported from the scene by ambulance to High Point Health for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. A 13 year old male student was initially entrapped in the bus. He was later freed from the wreckage. He was transported to High Point Health before being transferred to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The four remaining students were transferred to a different bus and were transported to South Dearborn Middle School and High School. At least one of those students was later transported to High Point Health by a family member for evaluation of minor injuries.
Both Nies and Rumpke submitted to blood draws while at High Point Health although alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors at this time.
The Indiana State Police worked with the South Dearborn School Corporation and the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department in quickly determining the identities of all children on board and getting their families notified.
State Road 350 was closed in the area for approximately four hours for crash investigation and cleanup.
The crash remains under investigation.
The Indiana State Police was assisted by the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department, Aurora Police Department, Lawrenceburg Police Department, Moores Hill Police Department, Aurora Fire Department, Moores Hill Fire Department, Dearborn County EMS, Ripley County EMS, and South Dearborn School Corporation.

This man was my bus driver to the career center when I was in school and he was a helluva guy! Almost all the students respected and minded that man. I never once felt unsafe riding in the big yellow twinky with Ray behind the wheel. DO NOT CHARGE THIS MAN.
Absolutely NO CHARGES!! Sun was blinding that morning, as so many have attested to. His conscience is already eating him alive. He was more concerned about those kids than he was with his own injuries while evaluations were being done at the hospital..
He is such a caring bus driver. I never heard any of my kids say Mr Neice drove too fast but they did complain about the driver who took his place that she drove too fast. Mr Neice has always had the kids best interest
I've drove that road many of a times and that sun coming up over that hill is blinding at time,Ray has been a dedicated reliable bus driver for years I can only imagine the guilt he's already feeling ,he shouldn't have to suffer more.
I have known Ray for years all 3 of my Sons rode his bus my oldest no being 40. This is so wrong Ray would never do anything to hurt any child, adult, animal he is just that good of a person. It was an accident nothing more.
I drive a school bus as well and know Ray. That morning the sun was very bright for me. I could understand it causing problems in another driver. I don't think Ray should be charged for anything. I believe we should just praise Ray for hitting the trash truck instead of hitting the oncoming car head on and thank God no one was seriously hurt.
Please do not charge Ray with anything except caring for our children. He is an exceptionally friendly and warm person. I have known him for 30+ years, and I know that I am no one to you, to have you accept my word, but please consider all of these comments of more who know him. He is a good and decent man, and an accident is an accident.. I think the comment from one of the people above who suggested that the garbage truck routes run after the school buses are off the roads is an excellent idea...

Take some responsibility Dearborn county. Maybe instead of trying to charge a traumatized man of an accident, you could work toward a solution. Maybe install some kind of darkened windshield so the sun isn’t such a bother.
