Dear Congressman Honda & Congresswomen Eshoo, On March 5th 2009, the Santa Clara County Democratic Party passed a resolution (Bring Peace to Sri Lanka), spearheaded by Democratic Party voting member Jay Surier. The resolution requests that the US Congress and Federal Administration pressure the Sri Lankan Government to hold a referendum in the North and Eastern regions of Sri Lanka to determine if the region should become autonomous or completely independent. The majority of Santa Clara’s Sri Lankan community is deeply committed to the Democratic Party and is outraged that the party would pass a resolution whose aim is to divide Sri Lanka into two states. It is, further, an insult to the Sri Lankan community that the Democratic Party did not provide an opportunity for Sri Lanka’s other ethnic groups consisting of – the majority Sinhalese and other ethnic groups such as Tamils, Moors etc., to voice their concerns about this resolution. Over the past thirty years, a minority Tamil terrorist group (LTTE) has killed many Sinhalese, Moors, and Tamils living throughout the island. Many other ethnic Sinhalese and Moors have had to abandon their businesses and homes in North and Eastern Sri Lanka and seek refuge in South Western part of Sri Lanka. The majority of Sri Lankan Tamils have lived side by side with Sinhalese, Moors and Burghers. However, a small minority group of Tamils does demand an independent homeland and has run a propaganda campaign in western countries in support of this. This terrorist minority has murdered a Sri Lankan President, an Indian Prime Minister, many of their own Tamil politicians, and Tamil thousands of Tamil civilians who did not agree with their philosophy and demands. They are currently holding seventy thousand of their own Tamil civilians as a human shield against Sri Lankan government troops who seek to eradicate terrorism on the island. Sri Lankan residents of Santa Clara County fear for the safety of their relatives still living in Sri Lanka. We do not want the United States government to help Tamil terrorists create an independent state within Sri Lanka – a state which will carry out more terrorist activities and kill more innocent Sinhalese, Tamil and Moore civilians. We are requesting that the Santa Clara County Democratic Party officers rescind the resolution regarding a referendum in the Noth-Eastern region of Sri Lanka.
