We feel as though the elimination of the Activities Coordinator position at the Center for Diversity is a drastic mistake. After witnessing the lack of activity in the Center for Diversity in the beginning of the Fall 2008 semester, it is quite obvious that SUNY Potsdam’s Center for Diversity is not the same without this essential position. The person in this position coordinates and plans events that educate and promote diversity within the SUNY Potsdam community. These events include, but are not limited to, Multicultural Weekend, Sex week, community service at the YMCA in Malone, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Dinner. The Inauguration Day mixer was yet another crucial event organized by the CFD Activities Coordinator, one which received local Channel 7 News coverage. The Activities Coordinator inspires the students that he/she comes in contact with to excel. The Activities Coordinator also advises students on academic, extracurricular, and long-term career issues. If this position is cut, there will be a direct hindrance of progression at SUNY Potsdam.
