I find it ironic that the people who make the calls on if school will be in session or will not are the ones that get to sit at home and not do a thing. This district is full of politics. They wanna teach us values and how to be safe. Well I don't believe frost bite is a very safe issue. If someones child gets frostbite the district will be seeing quite a few law suits, school attendance will be the last of their worries then.

I go to one of the High Schools in District 186, In my perspective I believe we shouldn't have school. It makes no sense to me how they can cancel certain days that are not as bad as what tomorrow the 28th is suppose to be. When I think of this situation, I'm concerned for the younger children who attend schools within this district because they are more likely to get sick when walking in this dangerously cold weather. By these kids getting sick , this can cause multiple days of calling in absent .In my High School , I see teens coming in with no coat or jacket or proper warm clothing. You have to think that some people within Springfield can't afford certain things and people do struggle, not to mention some of the students are homeless. You have to take in all certain factors when this occurs , just like some people can't afford a car so they can't drive their child to school they have to resort to taking the bus or walking. The bus is another major problem that we have with our district all year round. The bus is always late or a problem has occurred!!! I sit in my first hour and see students come in 20 minutes late. I find that unacceptable because we are suppose to trust the people of the school district to provide proper transportation and this is not proper . I understand maybe once in a while because of some problem or maybe traffic like trains. It is pretty bad when parents say that the school should be canceled but when I was looking through my Facebook I came across post from teachers who teach in the district that believe that school should be canceled to protect the students. I also believe that the district should have a better way of telling us if school is canceled or so on. On the school districts Facebook page I came across a post which says "We suggest that our families and students stay tuned to media outlets for announcements regarding school closings throughout this period of extremely cold temperature that may extend into the morning hours," I

Thank you for bringing this up. In the Springfield School District 186 Student Handbook it does outline that students have these dress codes to keep them appropriate and SAFE. (pg 22 at the bottom) If students can't dress appropriately and safely according to the District Policy then why should they be made to go to school in such harsh conditions? Especially if they have to wait for a buss or walk to school?

For sure! Not to mention we're forced to park 3 blocks away because our school doesn't have an adequate parking lot!

Exactly! My daughter has to wear dress pants and polo shirts. When was the last time you saw a pair of warm dress pants? They're made for looks, not warmth.

Having school tomorrow in these whether conditions definitely isn't a good idea. Some schools don't have any heat and always has the air conditioning on. How are students suppose to learn in those conditions?

Really? You know it's cold when the Chicago public school district is closed, along with all surrounding suburbs. Springfield should have a cold day tomorrow to, cause it's gonna be colder tomorrow then it was today.

It's too cold for the poor kids to stand outside waiting for the bus, and it's too cold for the kids to walk to and from school. They could get frostbite! Are you people crazy!
