Distracted Driving: Encourage Social Media Companies To Help End This Epidemic
Distracted driving kills more than 3,000 people and injures over 430,000 people each year and those numbers are growing. http://www.distraction.gov/stats-research-laws/facts-and-statistics.html
What's making the problem worse: people who use social media apps while driving. This affects every single driver and their loved ones. What can we do about it? Plenty!
Have you ever noticed when you open up Facebook they will have a message at the top such as "Happy 4th of July!"? We want all social media companies to have a message that says “Don’t use our app while driving”. By social media we mean Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Kik, WhatsApp, Instagram, Periscope, Vine, and Waze. With billions of users across the globe, social media companies are in a position to make a real difference in making our roads safer.
The Partnership for Distraction-Free Driving, made up of the National Safety Council, Safe Roads Alliance, Hang Up and Drive, We Save Lives, EndDD.org, Conor Lynch Foundation, Lifesaver App, Shreya Dixit Foundation, leading researchers at University of Utah and University of Kansas and many other advocates, has launched a petition drive to encourage social media companies to do the following:
- Implement a warning screen upon opening app, if driving. A recent intervention by Waze is an excellent example. (i.e. Waze: message pops up saying “Typing is disabled while driving. Please try again when stopped!”)
- Issue a public statement that they do not condone the use of social media while driving.
- Partner with highway safety advocates and develop a responsible public policy that would discourage the use of using social media while driving.
These companies have revolutionized the way we communicate by continuously evolving to meet our ‘wants’. Let’s come together as one and express that this ‘want’ is worth their time and effort too!
Please sign our petition and show that you support our goal of creating a safer driving environment for all. Our goal - 10,000 signatures by May 31st.

After signing, you will be asked if you would like to make a donation. Please note that this would go towards the running of the iPetitions platform, not the PDFD. We are not seeking, nor are we accepting, any donations at this time! Thank you.
