I support and applaud Rose McGowan and others in the #ROSEARMY in their efforts to bring to light abusive practices by Harvey Weinstein. What I have seen about this situation (the information, recorded evidence, and statements from some of the victims, NYPD, Hollywood Reporter, etc, and people who knew about Weinstein's behavior) is enough for me to believe the truth of this situation and publicly support efforts for justice and consequences.
As a lawyer, I know that the Court of Public Opinion can be stronger, faster, more just, and more effective than the power of the law and a legal Court, with its high burdens of evidence and skewed laws that have been generally written, enforced and upheld by men and the patriarchy, all of which make proving such allegations difficult, if not impossible.
Additionally, Non-Disclosure Agreements are tools abused by the powerful and wealthy to keep victims quiet and avoid a trial and possible judgment/conviction, and all the media attention it would bring. This leaves social consequences as the final way to bring attention, light, and ultimately justice to perpetrators' actions.
Lastly, all the people in the Weinstein Company have been profiting from Weinstein's abuse, among others who have worked with him or had something to gain by remaining quiet. They should not financially benefit either. I support this movement to bring social and financial consequences to Weinstein's behavior, which if they are as alleged, which I believe them to be, are illegal, in addition to immoral, exploitative, and abusive. Our society needs to send a message that this kind of conduct will no longer be tolerated, and women and victims will use their voices and power to speak up against abuses of power and stop it.
