I always found that he stood uncomfortably close when speaking to you, this coming from a girl. I forgot my project once and he yelled at me and another student infront of the whole class, my grandfather drove across town to bring it for me so I wouldn't get yelled at even more. At least it was only half a semester.

No ones trying o defeat you van g, the whole point of this is to make you aware that what you are doing is not professional, sure maybe you want to help the kids, but you are giving ppl an impression that you are making fun of them, and you are making lots of ppl feeling uncomfortable. The only reason you are still there is because of the union, nobody really likes you as a teacher, are you sure this is the right career for you? “Defeat you” what are you? Some 12 year old? We are trying to solve a problem here, not to fight you, shame on you. You are a grown man, and you really need some self reflecting time. be mature and be better.

I've had him before, but we need a teacher like him around.
I believe lots of you should re-evaluate what you're doing. Sure, he made you feel uncomfortable. Sure, you might think he's a racist (he isn't by the way) and sure, he hurt your feeling because he was rude. Guess what guys... You're going to encounter people like this throughout your life, and you're just gonna learn how to deal with it. This isn't dealing with it. This is just cowardice.

I totally agree, if the teacher treats students like that he shouldn’t be teaching at ldhss. If it’s a “community filled with positivity” then why should students feel judged by their own teacher, now that’s just messed up man.

I disagree. Van G is a wonderful man. Never in my entire career have I met such a well-structured and straight to the point man as Mr. Van G. The board needs more teachers just like him. Don't fire this asset just because of a few undisciplined students with a predisposition to dislike fat white men who have an interest in motorbikes and rage against the machine, an archetype we all too often jump to assume the title of "bigot". If there's anything I've learned from his Civics class, it's that we live in a free democracy full of many people and many opinions, and the average high-school education cannot come close to teaching the scope of it. It would be unfair to dismiss this man when all he's doing is his job, and doing a great job at it if you ask me. Mr. Van G is the physical manifestation of the unpopular, frowned upon set of beliefs, frowned upon like so many religions, ideologies, and groups of people before him, yet they've managed to integrate peacefully into society. How can one dismiss the most real and raw expression of that lesson to students. Every mistake can be looked at as a learning experience, even when it seems mistakes are the only thing coming out of his mouth. Keep Van G, and remember the impact he can have in sparking the realization of the extent, and an interest in the value of considering different perspectives.

He talked to me in the hall and I thought I was going to be sick. I was shaking. It did not feel like a safe learning environment. I had heard that he calls students dumb so I did not feel safe to ask him questions.
