There is a Nevada Revised Statute (NRS 485.317 Department to verify insurance for each motor vehicle registered in this State; owner to respond to inquiry when Department unable to verify insurance; suspension of registration when insurance cannot be verified; reinstatement of registration) that is discriminatory in nature against low-income, fixed income and unemployed people here in Nevada. This Statue states that if you lapse in your insurance that you must pay a fine between $250-$750 or your registration will be suspended. That in itself is not disscriminatory. What they don't tell you is that you must pay the fine IN FULL, no payment arrangements, or reductions in the fine for hardship. So if you have re-insured your vehicle and are current, you still have to pay this fine and at that point it is just a government fee. Why would the government not allow anyone to make payment arrangements? For those on fixed incomes, low-incomes, or that are unemployed, it may not be feasible to pay the entire fine all at once. The Nevada Government does not care about those less fortunate than those working in government, and this statute proves that message. Please sign this petition so that we can send a clear message to the Nevada Legislature that they need to consider people with hardships, lower incomes, etc. when they create statutes.
