On December 5, 2014, two California senators announced that they intended to introduce legislation to legalize assisted suicide. The undersigned of this petition believe that all persons have value and should never be discarded nor encouraged to give up on themselves. We believe in the dignity of Life, not Death, and are strongly opposed to legislation that would legitimize suicide or euthanasia of people.

People with terminal illness need quality care and compassion. Not poison.

The advocates of euthanasia try to paint a picture of unbearable pain and suffering that can only be relieved through death. But this is not supported by the facts. In the State of Oregon statistics, 91.5% of patients that requested medication to end their lives cited 'Loss of Autonomy' as a reason, not pain. In fact, unmanaged pain was cited in only 24.7% of all cases in Oregon. More troubling, "Burden on Family and Friends" was cited in surprising 40% of all cases, making concern for the impact on others a much more significant factor in deciding commit suicide than concern for pain.

Clearly, a terminal diagnosis would be a horrible situation. But it is unfair to place our most vulnerable in a position of agonizing over the burden they are causing others and whether they should end their life to protect their loved ones. These are good people, that care about others. They need to receive the love they have for others. There is just no way to safeguard against this burden. Rather, better care is needed for those in the 24.7% where the pain was a factor in their decision.
