Difficult Financial Economics Paper Actuarial Science Part 2 - 13/05/2015

The exam was totally different to what we were told to expect. I put in so many hours of work and feel like it was a total waste of time because none of it was relevant to the questions on the paper.

Creating and signing a petition means you are accusing a lecturer of setting an unfair paper. This is very disrespectful and action will be taken against students who have signed the petition.

I am very disappointed with the students who have signed this petition. In lectures, I repeatedly said that material from the textbooks which I recommended could be examined as well as material from the lecture notes. Professor Ben Rickayzen has been made aware of this petition and all students involved may face action.

I have to agree with what has been said about the exam. I've spent an enormous amount of time studying the relevant materials unfortunately the majority of the exam was not what we had prepared for during the lectures and outside of the lectures.

I find it quite deplorable that so many students are here complaining about the exam. Exams at the university level are designed to test a student’s understanding of the subject, not their ability to regurgitate lecture notes or past-paper mark-schemes. CT8 has a reputation for being probably the most challenging of the CT exams. Naturally for a paper to grant this as an exemption means it needs to be of comparable difficulty and depth as the actual CT8 exam itself. Now, the FE moodle page has TWO books listed as recommended reading. Modern Portfolio Theory is an excellent book which builds on concepts from the lectures, but with fantastic detail. Much of what was in the exam today came exclusively from this textbook. Unlike so many other modules on this course, this exam assessed knowledge from beyond lectures, and I am glad it did, because this is what separates the best students from the rest. If you found today’s paper “difficult,”perhaps I can offer two guesses as to why this might be: 1. The paper was indeed difficult 2. You were underprepared “One cannot blame Mt Everest for being too high, only that you were not prepared to climb it.” - me xoxo

I understand that the lecturer wanted to test us but it was beyond the lecture notes and exam materials. I would say that this is unfair for all for us that really studied hard for the exam. We really hope that the university would take this into consideration and please do understand our situation. Thank you.

We did not have sufficient material that could have prepared us for this exam. Having done all exercise sheets, past papers, class work and studied countless hours, the exam questions did not resemble any of what we were given as stated it would on moodle.

A difficult paper indeed.
