Wetherspoons is opening a new establishment in Dumbarton, at the old Woolworth site on the High Street, but intends to name it the 'The Sir James Laing'.
Sir James Laingwas a Tyneside shipbuilder, surely Wetherspoons could have carried out some local research and used the name of a local business / trades person i.e Archibald McMillan, shipbuilder at the West Bridgend from 1832 - 1930, or Peter Denny who started the 'Denny Brothers' yard.
Although neither McMillan or Denny were knighted surely their names are far better candidates than that of a knighted Tyneside shipbuilder.
Please sign this petition which we can forward to Wetherspoon and let them know the people of the local area have a voice and are not happy about the proposed name for their new establishment.

Wetherspoons have not thought this 1 through, the new pub would be better named after Peter Denny!!!!
This is ridiculous dumbarton is famous for its own shipbuilding and like other witherspoons this should named appropriately

I strongly believe that the name of this pub should be relevant to the people of this community. To name if after a shipbuilder from tyneside is an affront to the famous Dumbarton born shipbuilders such as peter denny.? Why was this overlooked? What relevance does this man sor james laing have to the ppl of dumbartonshire?
