Regarding the Development behind Rehoboth Baptist Church:
Please sign this petition that will go to the Tucker City Council, the Mayor and to Carlton Robertson (Rip), Head of Parks and Recreation.
As a concerned neighbor, I am asking you, our Mayor and City Council members, to hold Minerva Accountable for the work they are developing behind Rehoboth Baptist Church. We need the Council and the City to do the following:
1) Request that Minerva re-engineer the retention pond to be further from the water's edge.
2) Conduct water Tests of the marsh behind where the line ends before work begins (now), and again every 20 days. Make necessary remediations for contaminated water.
3) Restore the hiking trail with natural surface materials as soon as the retention pond is finished, but before home and townhouse construction begins.
4) Amend Ordinance 02018-08-30, approved Aug. 27, 2018 to add the following:
- Owner/Developer shall be responsible for the maintenance of the retention pond and not defer that responsibility to future homeowners.
- Owner Developer shall require future homeowners to use only natural yard treatments and to abstain from using toxic pesticides or fertilizers.
- Mitigate or cease further destruction of trees (including Pine trees and not just “healthy specimen trees), that support the wildlife in the Johns Homestead, Twin Brothers Lake acreage.
We truly appreciate your service to the city and making this area as close to a Nature Preserve as possible. This could be a showcase for why new residents would want to live in Tucker. We need your help now.

I am gathering documentation on the current state of the property to present directly to the council. Email your city council representative today to demand they enforce the water testing requirements immediately.

Lawrenceville Hwy. sits on a ridge, with water flowing downward into the lake and neighborhoods below. DeKalb County has purchased at least seven parcels/homes at risk of flooding in order to increase the green space and mitigate the risks to remaining homes. Inadequate management of this new development--and the removal of so many mature trees--threatens both the wildlife AND the multiple neighborhoods sitting on the south side of Lawrenceville Hwy.
So sad to see this happen in our neighborhood. This is not what was presented at the meetings. Minerva stated that they were going to preserve this wetland and the trail. The trail is completely blocked off now.
Minerva has stated how they will preserve the natural habitat. At this juncture they have only harmed it. Please walk the trail and see!
As a neighbor who has been concerned about this highly sensitive watershed area since BEFORE the Minerva development was even under discussion, I am appalled but not surprised that they seem to be not adhering to their promises. This is an invaluable wetland and natural habitat to Great Blue Herons during nesting season, hawks, owls and many other types of birds and other wildlife. The Tucker City Government needs to stand up for our green space, as they have promised so many times to do.
I was devastated to see the destruction already wrought to the area near Johns Homestead. The area is home to numerous animals and plants that are rare in the area: a variety of turtles, frogs, crayfish, deer, foxes, great blue herons, beavers, bats, a variety of insects, many species of birds. The area cleared for construction is so close to the lake/creek on certain steep hillsides, there is grave risk of significant erosion and runoff. I've already noticed a significant increase in mosquitoes (never having been bitten in the three years prior to this construction during frequent visits), indicating that sentinel species that maintain equilibrium are already being affected by the construction.
It is critical to protect what green spaces are left after too much development as well as wildlife.
Work to preserve the beautiful area there and not let developers ruin it. Put in the protections now.

The issue is that the city allowed them to start the setback in the middle of the upper lake, disregarding the fact that what was once a creek on paper is now a lake and not on paper.
