South Africans have rightly decried the Government's attempts to steamroll through the Protection of State Information Act, the so called 'Secrecy Bill'. It is an aberration in a democratic country and a threat to our freedom. And yet the Jewish Community and its media are being subjected to the same high handed and oppressive actions by our Communal Leadership. These actions undermine and threaten the continued existence of our dynamic and vibrant Community. We the undersigned therefore wish to register our concern and dismay at the most recent attempt to silence critics or perceived 'enemies' of the South African Jewish Communal Leadership. The recent firing of Anthony Katz from his regular show on Chai FM, allegedly as a direct result of the personal intervention by Communal Leadership, is the latest example of this dangerous trend. The vicious and personal campaign to stop Judge Richard Goldstone from attending his grandson's barmitzvah and the sidelining of the Baal Shem Tov Community and its Rabbi are two other examples of how those who do not 'toe the line' are sidelined and victimised. There are many others. The South African Jewish Community deserves accountable, transparent and open leadership in our Communal structures. Our future as a Jewish Community in South Africa is only secure when we have Communal Leadership who serve the Community in an honest and ethical manner, promoting our needs and interests instead of their own. We therefore call for the following: 1. The establishment of an Independent Inquiry to determine the exact nature of the Communal Leadership's role in Anthony Katz's dismissal from Chai FM; 2. The creation of an Independent Communal Ombudsman to mediate on matters of governance and process in relation to the actions of Communal Leadership as they affect individual members of the Jewish Community as well as Communal organisations; 3.
