Leather tanneries in Hazaribagh are some of the most polluted factories in the world with both environmental and social issues - toxic chemicals enter into the local water supply, workers aren't supplied with protective equipment and accidents with machinery occur frequently. Currently, there are 15 000 tannery labourers in the polluted neighbourhood of Hazaribagh - many of whom are children.

With informative labelling of where leather on every product is sourced from consumers are given a choice of where their products are made. We hope this will be a twofold process – with brands forced to label their products those sourcing leather from unethical factories will reconsider their supply chain and switch to choose suppliers with environmental and social sustainable regulations in place. Along with this, we hope the growing awareness of unethical leather production in society will encourage consumers to make choices that favour these regulated factories.

We implore Vincent Cable, the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and President of the Board of Trade, to push this petition through Parliament and into legislation.
