On 29 August, IIT (BHU) students were physically attacked by Birla hostel residents merely for passing through their road. This incident was not an isolated occurrence. Over the past few years, repeated incidents of violence and intimidation by BHU (Birla hostel) groups have created an unsafe environment for IIT students.
Unlike other IITs such as IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Delhi, which provide secured campuses, IIT (BHU) remains an open campus where outsiders can frequently intrude, thereby endangering students’ lives. This lack of security has become a recurring threat to both our academic and personal safety.
Thousands of IIT (BHU) students are compelled to live under constant fear of harassment and assault whenever they step outside hostels or laboratories. This situation adversely affects our studies, our peace of mind, and our overall well-being.
We respectfully request your urgent intervention to ensure that IIT (BHU) students are provided with the same level of security and protection as those in other IITs. Establishing a closed and fully secured campus is essential for safeguarding students’ academic pursuits and personal safety.

There have been numerous cases of catcalling and sexual harrasment of girls by Birla Hostel students as well. There is rarely any legal action taken against the outsiders, posing a strong need to separate the campus of IIT BHU from BHU.
