Demanding the PM to make IIT BHU safe for students

We, the students of IIT (BHU) Varanasi and concerned citizens of India, are deeply disturbed by the violent incident that took place on 1st September involving IIT students and local residents near the Birla area. This clash has not only endangered the lives of innocent students but has also created a serious atmosphere of fear and insecurity on campus and in the surrounding areas.
IIT (BHU) is one of the country’s premier institutions, where students from across India come to pursue their education and contribute to the nation’s growth. No student should have to live under constant threat of violence or compromise their safety while pursuing education. Unfortunately, repeated instances of clashes and lack of adequate protection have made students feel vulnerable and unheard.
We demand urgent action from the Government of India and the Honourable Prime Minister to ensure:
- Enhanced security measures in and around IIT BHU, especially near sensitive areas like Birla.
- Strict legal action against those responsible for violence and intimidation.
- Permanent deployment of adequate police/security forces to prevent such incidents in the future.
- Collaboration between the district administration, IIT BHU authorities, and student representatives to create a safe and supportive environment.
The safety of students is non-negotiable. We urge the government to take immediate and decisive steps to restore peace and guarantee the protection of every student on campus.
Unlike other IITs in India which enjoy the safety of a closed and secure environment, IIT (BHU) continues to remain vulnerable, and our safety is repeatedly compromised.
- Brutal Assault on August 31st, 2025: On this day, three IIT students were mercilessly beaten by Birla hostel students simply for walking past their road. This unprovoked act of violence has shaken the entire IIT (BHU) community.
- Previous Clashes (2023–2024): This is not an isolated incident. Time and again, Birla students have attacked IIT students in groups, creating an environment of constant fear. Numerous fights and assaults have been reported in the past two years, showing a clear pattern of hostility.
- Unsafe Environment: The notoriety of BHU outsiders has become a defining threat to our academic life. Students, especially those returning late from labs, library, or hostels, are at continuous risk of harassment, intimidation, and physical assault.
Sir, this situation is unique to IIT (BHU). No other IIT in the country operates under such unsafe conditions. Students in IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, or IIT Madras enjoy a fully secure, closed-campus environment where learning and innovation can flourish without fear of being attacked by outsiders.
We strongly appeal to you to ensure that IIT (BHU) is finally given the same protection and autonomy that other IITs enjoy. A closed campus with proper boundaries, restricted outsider access, and strict security measures is the only solution to safeguard the thousands of students who study and live here.
Our humble but urgent call to action:
Please take immediate steps to secure IIT (BHU) with a closed campus structure and ensure that the menace of Birla and BHU outsiders no longer threatens the lives and dignity of IIT students.
India looks to IITs as pillars of progress. We cannot build the future of the nation while living in fear. It is time IIT (BHU) too becomes as safe, secure, and respected as every other IIT.
