Stop the Cycle: Demand Tougher Punishments for Youth Criminals

Youth crime in New Zealand has reached a crisis point, with charges against young offenders increasing by 35% in 2023. These teenagers often come from unstable, impoverished households, and are heavily influenced by negative social circles and the use of social media. The economic impact is severe, costing NZ retailers $1 billion annually. Despite these issues, current New Zealand laws do not impose sufficient punishments.
Our group urges the government to provide support and place stricter legal consequences to ensure a safer future for New Zealand. We aim to influence the "Oranga Tamariki Act 1989." Currently, young offenders under 16 must pay victims for emotional harm or property loss. We seek to add that offenders between the ages of 10-16 should also be placed in Oranga Tamariki youth justice residences for a certain period of time. This change aims to: ensure accountability, provide rehabilitation, and protect communities.
