FIRST OF ALL I NEED TO MAKE IT CLEAR EVERYTHING YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ ARE NOT MY PERSONAL OPINIONS AND VIEWS. WE ALL CAN AGREE THAT WE TRULY APPRECITE EVERYTHING OUR TEACHERS HAVE DONE FOR OUR CHILDREN DURING THESE CRAZY TIMES, SO THANK YOU FOR ADJUSTING YOUR WAY OF TEACHING. SECONDLY, THESE ARE FEELINGS AND CONCERNS FROM MULTIPLE FAMILIES WITHIN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. WE BELEIVE WE ARE OUR OWN CHILDREN'S ADVOCATES AND OUR VOICES, FEELINGS AND CONCERNS SHOULD BE HEARD AND BEAR WEIGHT WHEN DECISIONS ARE BEING MADE FOR OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR FUTURE.

We the parents of the Huron Valley School District are calling for the district to follow suit, like the other surrounding school districts, and open up schools to a minimum of 4 days a week. We understand that a cleaning day is necessary to maintain a safe and clean environment for our children, which is why we are willing to compromise. When the school board gave families a choice of enrolling their children in either the virtual academy or face to face, they blindsided the families who chose full-time face to face by voting for a hybrid model. Their stipulation of "reevaluating" when the state goes into phase 5 of reopening is unrealistic. All the surrounding school districts have opened up while we, the parents, are FORCED to become educators. This selfish decision the board voted for has destroyed working parent's jobs and careers, but most importantly this is doing a disservice for our children and their education.

The following are concerns and complaints from families within the school district:

Complaints about Hybrid/Current School State

Petition to Go to Full-time Face-to-Face

  • The current state of HVS is that district will not go back until phase 5
  • Recommend to re-evaluate and determine a reasonable date that is similar to other districts, not tied to a phase for the whole county
  • Conduct research of other districts and their plans (i.e. Clarkston, Holly, Brighton, etc.)
  • No access to a teacher 3 days/week
  • Teachers goal is 2-4 hours/day but is more like 5-8 hours with a parent supervising the whole time. The time vary between grades and teachers
    • Families with multiple children are essentially contributing 10-16+ hrs a day towards the children's school work
  • We the parents accept the risks that come with our children being in school full time
  • Spring virtual classes were working better, they saw their teacher every day
  • Kids are breaking down into tears daily due to extreme confusion of not understanding the assignment or subject
  • This schedule/setup is dramatically impacting parents job due to additional responsibility as an educator
  • WE ARE NOT EDUCATORS
  • This setup has caused massive anxiety for children. This is not mentally healthy for them
    • Parents keep telling our children to put a note on their homework if not able to understand the subject (within reason) but some teachers are putting too much pressure on the kids that all assignments are mandatory (any missed assignment will cause them to fall behind)
  • Hybrid teachers have mentioned that they hybrid classes are behind the full time virtual academy. These hybrid classes should not be so far behind from their virtual classmates.
  • Families are having discussions about which spouse/ significant other should quit their job, this would add financial stress on their lives. Other families have to take their kids to work.
    • Several have already quit their job

WE ASK THAT ANYONE WHO SIGNS THIS PETITION PLEASE BE A TAX PAYER IN THE HURON VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT OR ARE A SCHOOL OF CHOICE FAMILY
