The 8th Principle has been authored by the group, Black Lives of UU (BLUU) and is advocating for its formal adoption “articulating a commitment to the dismantling of white supremacy within the state principles of our faith.”

And our Board decided to *not* bring it up for discussion and a vote.

Once again, we are seeing white people deciding that ‘now is not the time’ to deal with the issues of racism and white supremacy. When will white America ever learn?!

I am encouraging all members of our congregation to support this petition to our Board which requests that a discussion and vote at our Annual Meeting proceed. And that we join in solidarity with other UU congregations around the country and especially in solidarity with our UU People of Color.

Let’s follow the lead of John Lewis who said “If not us, then who? If not now, then when?” Let’s add our collective UUUtica voice to those around the country who are affirming the 8th Principle right now.

While the first two UU principles should be enough to help congregants focus on this issue, (1.The inherent worth and dignity of every person; 2: Justice, equity and compassion in human relations) however, if it takes an eighth principle as a call to action to change, then now is the time.

I would have preferred that our congregation had invested the time necessary to engage the depth of discussion required to bring about the individual understanding and buy-in that the support of this principle by our members deserves. However, we cannot now use our lack of moving forward in this effort, of bringing this topic to our congregants in a timely manner, as yet another barrier in lending our support for the adoption of this principle that gives voice to that which is long overdue and a vital component in the fulfilling of our UU Principles.

This is so appropriate for UU Congregations and meshes seamlessly with our other principles.
