On September 11, 2001, a terrorist attack claimed the lives of almost 3,000 Americans.

America was targeted for attack because “we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining. On that day, our nation saw evil -- the very worst of human nature -- and we responded with the best of America. With the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could.”

Today, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum announced that the iconic Lower Manhattan 9/11 memorial display that features twin beams of light to honor victims of the terror attacks will not shine this year over coronavirus concerns. They have stated that the annual “Tribute in Light” display, which requires a large crew to pull off, is canceled because it poses a health risk this year that was “far too great.”

They have canceled the yearly reading of the victims’ names and now they have canceled the “Tribute in Lights.” I am sure that if we can find a way to allow 100s of people to camp overnight in a city park for weeks, “peaceful” protests, riots, funerals (one with over 10,000 people), gatherings to paint political messages on city streets, rallies, the MTV Music Video Awards (IN NYC), professional sports, etc., I am sure we can find a way to honor those 3,000 Americans who were slaughtered on that day.

Please join me in signing this petition to DEMAND that Mayor de Blasio, NYC leaders and the 9/11 Memorial Museum, at the very least, find a way to continue to “NEVER FORGET” the memory of those that lost their lives on that infamous day and to honor the brave men and women who continue to put their lives on the line to defend the very freedoms and ideals that America stands for. Let us honor those iconic buildings that were targeted because they stood as a shining example of American greatness. So, I am asking you to join me in signing this petition “In a spirit of unity and remembrance.” Today, we must come together, like we did on that day, TO DEMAND that the “Tribute in Lights” be held as originally planned, so that America can continue “to inspire the world and honor the promise to never forget.

I am sure that if the issue is coming up with the funds for NYPD and other NYC agencies to ensure that this event is as safe as the VMA’s, the citizens of NYC and across America would have no problem sponsoring the event. I am sure the 1000s of celebrities who have opened their wallets to promote “social justice” initiatives wouldn’t mind giving back to the country that allowed them to live their extravagant lifestyles.

Thank you,

John Ponzio

I really thought this might just fizzle out but seeing how many people just keep jumping on board is honestly making my head spin in the best way possible. It is strange how you start typing something out of pure frustration at three in the morning and then suddenly you realize you are definitely not the only person who feels this deep need for those lights to stay on.

It is so sad that there will be no remembrance reading the names of those lost. However the light tribute must continue. We will not and should not ever forget. The crew required to make this happen can wear ppe. They will be happy to comply. This must continue.

Please allow the lights to shine for the 911 Memorial. We have been through so much this year. Please allow us to see our beloved lights.

It’s totally ridiculous that the music awards are ok at the Barclays Center but a crew can’t assemble this OUTDOORS!

NEVER FORGET We can loot and rob, MTV can have their video music awards, MLB can play with some close player contact with coaches, we can hold several massive state funerals, we can have numerous outdoor parties, we can go to Walmart, BUT we can't set up a traditional tribute to 9/11 murdered ???

The excuse given to not do this, is 100% bogus! This is a slap in the face to all who perished, their families, the first responders and all of America. Shame on you for making such a cold hearted decision. SHAME ON YOU!!
