Well, I've signed, but with mixed feelings. Calling for Kevin Backhurst's head on a plate, while it is a master stroke of publicity and suspense from a screenwriter's point of view, seems a bit too John the Baptist-y from the point of view of a lapsed Catholic such as we all are nowadays in Donnybook. God knows what those Muslims in the Dáil will make of it. In that respect it is, of course, very Right-Wing, completely Nigel Farage-ist. Indeed, it is very Enoch Burkean. Would we not be talking about him if he wasn't locked up in jail? Come to that, why is Graham Linehan allowed to roam free in Arizona? Believe you me, Donald Trump is at the back of it. Anyway, Kevin Backhurst has a serious charge to answer: did he really think it was a good idea to show how fun-loving RTE is by showing instead of the Eurovision Song Contest the episode of 'Father Ted' that mocks its tunelessness? I lived in Dublin for years- during the Celtic Tiger, as a Canadian. I have so many friends, whom I have visited for decades. The last time I was back (last year) the country is unrecognisable to me. Hate and propaganda on the radio in every taxi ride. Public signs. Television programs claiming “debate” but only showing one strident, alarming opinion on the public broadcaster. It shocked me to my foundation. I am a Canadian Jew. I am stunned at Ireland today. I don’t think I can ever return. Horrific.
