The Task: To demand that music instrument tuition programmes in State schools are given more funding and attention so they become available to all the students who wish to benefit from them.

The Issue: Many students in the State education system are unable to access quality music tuition programmes for an instrument or singing. They’re left with only classroom music lessons in which they’re lucky to pick up the same instrument more than two or three times a year.

Studies show that learning an instrument or singing helps to develop the mind in unique ways and there are strong correlations between the ability to play an instrument and gaining high scores in academic subjects such as maths. However, these opportunities remain largely unavailable to State school children who, due to a lack of school resources, are unable to access an adequate music tutoring programme.

The Solution: If we get enough support for this petition we’ll be able to join with State school music teachers and principals, put pressure on the Government to recognise the importance of music instrument programmes and bring about the increase in funding that’s needed in order to open the programmes to all who wish to learn.

Education is not just about producing individuals capable of writing and adding up, it’s also about supporting culture and teaching students how to live a balanced and enjoyable life. Learning how to play a musical instrument or sing at a young age benefits the student for their whole lifetime and those benefits are not limited to the individual but include their family, friends and the community.
