Demand La Cañada Terminate Contract with LASD and Invest in Equitable Alternatives

Young men die at our school every year from suicide and overdose. Policing and criminalization have done enough harm to our community. Take this moment to reflect on the needs of La Canada and the deaths of so many black Americans and you will realize that LASD is the problem, not the solution.

LCHS alumna, class of 2011 -- witnessed firsthand the unethical practices of LASD both on campus and in our community, especially towards BIPOC. Students and classmates of mine were frequently subject to entrapment + violations of personal rights as minors. The charade of law enforcement as a welcome and encouraged part of society is up.

Solid arguments and sources for an effective motion. Yes please.

Our community's history is as a red-lined sundown town. Our police, only 50 years ago, were complicit in the segregation and oppression of black members of the community. If it is seeped in a history of racism, dismantpe and remake it from scratch

I had one incident where I had to call the police and their excessive and unreasonable approach and how they made me feel about calling them, made me decide to never call 911 again.

- If you’re afraid of getting robbed, get a Ring. That way your feelings of security don’t have to come at the cost of people of color in this town getting harassed by the officers you demand to have. - reflect on every time you’ve interacted with the police here. How many times could you have benefited from somebody equipped with counseling skills, or somebody who you already knew, or somebody with medical skills, rather than an armed stranger? Cancelling this contract with LASD merely means reallocating the money we send to the LASD to better ways to benefit the public. - we can still enforce traffic laws without also giving the people in charge of enforcing them the power of life or death over citizens. - I really don’t see what else is stopping you from signing this petition already

Because the current system of police oversight is—at best—murky, it is not hard to imagine that the examples of officer misconduct provided in this letter are but a small sample of the fetid culture of brutality, racism, and abuse perpetuated by the LASD. I agree with the LC Black Lives Matter letter writers and request that La Cañada discontinue its association with the LASD.

A change must happen and now.

LASD & school enforcement are not a helpful part of the community. I was subject to an illegal search when I was a minor and didn’t know my rights better. I am lucky to have no record and to have the guidance to know how to fight, but there are plenty of students who end up having to transfer schools or face arbitrary punishment and a record for no reason. Stop criminalizing children.
