Migrant workers at Northeast dairy farms that supply milk to the Hannaford supermarket chain often experience dire working and living conditions: low wages, excessively long workdays, no time off and substandard overcrowded housing. The worker-led Milk With Dignity initiative of Migrant Justice can make a difference! Thanks to Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream joining the program, 20% of Vermont dairy farm workers now have guaranteed humane work and housing conditions and basic labor rights. Milk With Dignity puts the responsibility on dairy retailers to pay farmers a premium to adhere to the program's standards. This proven system gets human dignity results in my backyard that are important to me. As a Hannaford customer, I urge Hannaford's CEO Mike Vail to join Milk With Dignity.
