This is important to all of us, we can no longer allow blanket answers about what African American people "choose" to do that harms their health. Nutrition, access to appropriate care, stress management, all of these behavioral issues are mediated by a system that marginalizes black people. Ina May must take an active role as a leader in the birth community to acknowledge her mistake, apologize, and work to learn about maternal epidemiology and health disparities, only then can she regain respect as a knowledable birth worker. If not she only offers an anecdote of evidence what worked for an isolated group of people at one point in time.

This is unacceptable and only serves to support the truth of the black narrative of neglect as they are once again ignored and blamed for outcomes connected to treatment they receive or don't receive.
