Under the current Illinois sentencing statues, perpetrators found guilty and subsequently sentenced for violent offenses are mandated to serve 85% of the imposed sentence.
Convictions of any Domestic Violence charge is not necessarily considered a "violent crime", despite the blatant declaration of the term domestic violence. Without an enhancement of the charge into an Aggrevated Domestic Battery or the implication of manual strangulation of the victim by the offender, the crime is not viewed as violent by our judicial system, regardless of the brutality.

I propose an initiative to amend such sentencing statutes. All domestic violence crime should be treated with sensitivity and severity. These are violent assaults on victims related in some fashion to the transgressor. It should compel the legal system to declare domestic violence crimes valid, compulsary imfringements of a "violent nature" and demand an obligatory 85% of any imposed sentence be served as such.
