We, the undersigned, demand that the NYS DEC hold a Public Hearing on the DEC’s granting a permit to the Sand Land Mine, a known polluter. In September, 2018, the DEC stopped the operations of the mine, citing the Suffolk County Health Department’s report that found contaminants in our groundwater from the Mine’s operations. These contaminants, including carcinogens, pesticides, radio-active chemicals and excessive lead, iron and other metals, were found in our groundwater beneath the Mine. Despite this evidence, on March 20, 2019, the DEC gave the Mine a permit to operate for 8 years and dig 40 feet deeper and closer to our groundwater. We demand an opportunity to voice our concerns and have our questions answered at a public forum immediately.

The Sag Harbor/Noyac community was shocked at the proposed 8 year Mining permit for Sand Land. We had worked so diligently in collecting scientific data - offering presentations to the community of contaminants on our groundwater
I am shocked that this agreement was made in a meeting closed to the public. A forum open to the public must be held immediately for us to voice our concerns.
I was instrumental in getting Suffolk County Water on Millstone Road Residents near Noyac Road said the dogs wouldn’t even drink the well water!!! Shut down the Sand Mine It is illegal and poisoning people! Eileen Gallagher
It is beyond comprehension that the DEC would reverse its own decision that was based on EVIDENCE of cancer causing contaminants in the groundwater. This is obscene. There is no question that a public hearing must be held.
How can the DEC grant an 8 year permit to a Mine that the Health Department cited for contaminating our groundwater? The DEC is ignoring the problem and we want to know why this is continuing.
Please pay attention to the bill coming your direction. Under the legislation, introduced by sponsors State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. and Senator Kenneth P. LaValle on Thursday, May 9, mining would be prohibited on contaminated sites within the state’s special groundwater protection areas. Make sure this is NOT discussed behind closed doors and that the public is able to see and hear any and all arguments to keep the whole mine space open any longer and who is advocating such disregard for laws in place for decades- much less the health of our local environment.
This is a serious health issue for our community!

How can the DEC, the protector of our environment, issue a permit to a known polluter, the Sand Land Mine? The community has many questions and concerns that remain unanswered and would like the opportunity to hear the DEC answer them in a public forum.
