Demand a Fair, Transparent, and Student-Led Election at LIPA

As students of LIPA, we believe in democracy, transparency, and fairness. But the recent Student Voice election has shown us that our votes did not carry equal weight.
The current system gives each student officer — though elected — a voting weight equivalent to over 85 students. Their scores accounted for half the total result, despite being just four individuals. Meanwhile, hundreds of student votes were effectively reduced to a fraction of the final decision.
This is not what student representation should look like.
We, the undersigned, demand the following:
- Reform the voting system so that the outcome of student voice elections is determined solely by the student body — not disproportionately by a handful of internal reviewers.
- Publish full election procedures and criteria transparently ahead of time, so all candidates and voters understand how the process works.
- Ensure fairness and neutrality in election oversight, with safeguards to prevent internal bias or favoritism.
- Release anonymized results in every election so students can see how their vote was counted and how decisions were made.
This year’s election cannot be undone — but we can prevent this from happening again.
Let’s build a better system that truly values every student’s voice.
