We, the undersigned, respectfully request the City of Charlotte to designate September 4 as Dorothy Counts Day. This annual day of celebration and reflection will honor Dorothy Counts’ enduring legacy as a civil rights pioneer and advocate for equality.
Why September 4?On September 4, 1957, Dorothy Counts made history as one of the first African American students to integrate Harding High School in Charlotte, facing immense hostility with unmatched bravery. This date marks a pivotal moment in the fight for civil rights and serves as a powerful reminder of the progress achieved and the work that remains.
Additional Petition Passage for Naming the I-277 Bridge After Dorothy Counts
We call on the City of Charlotte to honor Dorothy Counts by naming the new I-277 pedestrian and bicycle bridge the Dorothy Counts Bridge. Dorothy Counts, since her iconic steps in 1957 continues moving mountains thus exemplifying courage and resilience in the face of intense adversity.
This bridge, designed to connect neighborhoods, symbolizes unity and reflects Dorothy Counts’ role in bridging divides within our community. Naming the bridge after her would celebrate her legacy, promote inclusivity, and inspire future generations.
