I urge our Department of Education and our local policy-makers to address the following topics: 1. Establishing a universal definition and understanding of the term "dyslexia" within our state education code. 2. Mandating early screening and identification of at-risk students. 3. Mandating Connecticut teacher certification and ongoing professional development to include training on dyslexia and appropriate intervention strategies. 4. Mandating the use of appropriate evidence based reading interventions for at-risk students in both general and special education programs. 5. Providing for access to assistive technology for all at-risk students in both general and special education programs.

This would help so many kids as a preventative step to early diagnosis.

Please help our children. Education should be considered a right to all kids. It's disturbing that parents would even need to fight for this fundamental right. Please give all children the same opportunities and the chance to learn, not merely pass them through grade after grade.

The State of Connecticut needs to get this done. All children deserve to be screened early and given access to the resources they need to facilitate their learning. Every teacher/educator should be educated about the signs and symptoms of dyslexia before they can recieve their certification to teach our children!

This legislation is needed by so many children. Their future depends on it!

the education system in CT needs to move away from the Reader's Workshop model promulgated by Teacher's College and move towards a Phonics-based model of Reading instruction.

The lack of teacher preparation and ongoing professional development in direct reading instruction stressing the foundation skills is sorely lacking. I feel badly for teachers who want to do right by their students but do not have the training.

It's simply unconscionable that our public school system has not adopted an evidenced based system by which they identify and teach our dyslexic students to read. We are failing these students on a daily basis, leading them to be marginalized and emotionally damaged. With this failure these student are not given the chance to reach a fraction of their potential. These mandates are more than over due as generation after generation of dyslexic students are pushed through the school system to graduate without adequate reading and writing skills.
