While my name appears under the signatures, I, myself, have neither signed, nor do I agree with this deceptively worded petition. I support the SPU Justice Coalition and believe that their claims are necessary to see the proper changes in our campus community.

Thank you all for this necessary and courageous dissent. While I agree with some of the SPU Justice Coalition's critiques, their antagonistic rhetoric, flawed thinking, and authoritarian solutions only exacerbate the problems they ostensibly seek to address. Keep up the good work. Best, Harrison Dietzman SPU '11 Ph.D Candidate, University of Iowa

While I do not find this petition perfect or a final answer to the questions out campus faces, I do think that it is a valuable addition to the conversation. From what I have seen on campus, anyone who raises concerns or suggests ideas that differ from the mainline opinion (most vocal and powerful opinion: that is, the SPU Justice Coalition's) is almost automatically accused of harboring racism, supporting a systemically racist status quo, and acting in bad faith. I find this disappointing, especially from a group that seeks to challenge the opinions of others; opinions are meant to be challenged. And despite the assurances that they do not claim to have all the answers, the actions of certain individuals belie their words.

Finally some logic at SPU

This sounds incredibly fair and just. It's not written from a standpoint of someone who wants to put others down but from the standpoint of someone who just wants to stop all the insanity and irrational chaos coming from the unnecessary racial tensions at my old school.

I agree with the petition. While the goal of the university may be to create a diverse and welcoming educational system for all, it seems the mode of accomplishing this is flawed. Directing the failed behaviors toward different target is not a solution.

Equality can not be forced, People like water will ALWAYS seek it's own level. Pushing people to a level they've not taken to themselves is foolish. Forced diversity is tyranny.

Pursuit of equality without holding to the same treatment of others is hypocrisy. Doing so disvalues the worthy cause and makes the hypocritical efforts a farce. Without clear, objective goals...it's like going to war on principle, wasting resources and hurting innocent bystanders because the strategy was based on emotional, nebulous well intentions and not thought out objectives and well-founded understandings...sound familiar? As a parent who pays the tuition for my child and gives to muliple charities, why would I ever consider giving future resources to a school if it can't demonstrate the capacity to be prudent with its resources and make well thought out decisions and not be merely reactive?

I agree with what this petition has to say about what it takes for students to flourish at a university. Right now, the SPU Unity Petition is proposing an incredibly impractical mode of action with the Chief Diversity Officer. This position allows for faculty who are capable of bringing about flourishing in students on both an educational and cultural level without necessarily needing to be of a different ethnicity than Caucasian.

I absolutely agree with this declaration, and stand behind it as an SPU alumni.
